Closet layout & storage planning

How to plan a custom closet around what you store

Start with the clothes and belongings you need to store, then discuss the space available. A useful closet plan connects hanging space, shelves and drawers with your daily routine rather than simply adding more compartments.

Bring room photos, approximate dimensions and your storage priorities to Modern Majestic. Our Naples and Oakland Park showroom teams can discuss a custom closet plan for your space; the written proposal confirms the selected system and project scope.

Walk-in or reach-in: plan around access

A walk-in closet has space you enter; a reach-in closet is accessed from the room in front of it. The useful question is how you will reach your belongings and open the doors and drawers in the proposed layout.

Make a short storage inventory

Describe what you own and what is difficult to store now. A rough count or photo is enough to start the conversation. If two people share the closet, list each person's priorities.

  • Hanging items: separate longer garments from shirts, jackets and other shorter items.
  • Folded items: note sweaters, shirts, linens and anything you prefer on a shelf or in a drawer.
  • Shoes, bags and accessories: identify the items you use daily and the pieces needing dedicated storage.
  • Seasonal and occasional items: include luggage, spare bedding and other bulky belongings.
  • Daily access: note which items should be easiest to reach and any access needs to discuss with the designer.

Bring room information for the design conversation

Photograph the full space, each wall and the doorway. Bring any floor plan you already have, or a simple sketch with approximate wall lengths, room height and the closet opening. Note doors, windows, baseboards, outlets and visible obstructions that could affect the plan.

These details help explain the room; they are not production measurements or installation instructions. Ask the team how final measurements, wall conditions and suitability of the selected system will be confirmed before approval.

Compare the proposed system with your routine

Review the proposed hanging areas, shelves, drawers and accessories alongside your inventory. Ask how the selected system fits the room, which components are included and what finish samples you can compare in the showroom.

Use the design to check everyday access, including how doors and drawers open. Ask for the specifications and care guidance for the actual materials and hardware in your quote, and discuss any preparation or installation requirements with the team.

What to confirm in a written closet quote

Compare the same room and storage priorities across proposals. Keep the approved layout with the written scope so the selected system and services are clear.

  • Layout: the agreed storage arrangement, dimensions and measurement approval process.
  • Components: the selected system, finishes, hanging areas, shelves, drawers and accessories.
  • Services: design, delivery and installation included in the quote, and any work arranged separately.
  • Room preparation: responsibility for existing closet removal, wall repairs and any other required preparation.
  • Schedule and price: approval steps, proposed dates, total amount, applicable taxes and selected additions.
  • Product information: care instructions and product-specific written warranty terms.
